Rwanda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe has met with his counterpart from the Solomons Islands have both established diplomatic relations between their countries.
“Minister Nduhungirehe held a meeting with Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka, Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of the Solomon Islands. During their meeting, the two ministers signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between Rwanda and the Solomon Islands, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations,” Rwanda Foreign Affairs Ministry said via platform X.
The Solomon Islands, a nation of hundreds of islands (of combined size of 28,896 km²) in the South Pacific has a population of 724,273.
The meeting of the two leaders was effected on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assemby in New York.
The Solomon Island’s population depends on agriculture, fishing, and forestry for at least part of its livelihood. Most manufactured goods and petroleum products must be imported. The islands are rich in undeveloped mineral resources such as lead, zinc, nickel, and gold.
Rwandans may tap into virgin opportunities in various sectors available in the Islands especially, infrastructure, mining, logging, private sector initiatives.
World Bank phone survey data indicates that food insecurity remains elevated, with an increasing share of the population worried about not having enough food to eat. Rwanda has in the recent past experienced bumper harvest of grain (corn, rice and beans) the Islands would provide market for surplus from Rwandan farmers.
