Two female students from Mutongo Secondary School in Rusizi District were arrested on January 24, 2025, for allegedly attempting to poison a classmate. The suspects, aged 19 and 21, reportedly targeted the victim because she often mocked them in front of others.
The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) confirmed the incident, stating the suspects laced the victim’s food with rat poison. However, the victim noticed a suspicious smell and raised the alarm before consuming the meal.
RIB spokesperson Dr. Thierry B. Murangira described the case as unique due to the young age of the suspects. During interrogation, they confessed to the act and explained their motives.
Dr. Murangira urged the public to resolve disputes through legal means, emphasizing that revenge is punishable by law.
The contaminated food has been sent for testing, and the suspects face charges of attempted crime and poisoning under Rwanda’s penal code, which carries a potential life sentence.
