In the aftermath of severe flooding in Rubavu District, the Rwanda Red Cross Society (RRCS) has been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts, providing essential aid to affected families.
The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall, caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, displacing numerous residents.
The RRCS, in collaboration with local authorities, has distributed relief items such as blankets, kitchen utensils, and hygiene supplies to families in need. In Nyakiliba Sector, 56 families received these essential items to replace belongings lost to the floods.
Additionally, 17 families were provided with 373 iron sheets to repair or rebuild their homes.
Emmanuel Mazimpaka, Director of Communication, Fundraising, and Humanitarian Diplomacy at RRCS, emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting affected communities.
He noted that since its establishment in 1962, the RRCS has been dedicated to preventing and alleviating human suffering through various emergency interventions, including evacuations, medical assistance, and the distribution of non-food items.
Local authorities have also taken steps to mitigate future disasters. Mayor Prosper Mulindwa of Rubavu District highlighted the importance of learning from the recent events.
He urged residents to secure their homes and make proper use of the aid provided, cautioning against selling relief items for personal gain. Mulindwa also pointed out that surviving such disasters is a fortune, as many have lost their lives in similar circumstances.
Efforts are underway to construct new homes for families displaced by the floods.
Approximately 870 homes are planned for construction in Rugerero Sector, aiming to provide safe and permanent housing for those affected.
This initiative is part of a broader government program to support disaster-stricken families across the district.
The RRCS continues to play a vital role in disaster response and recovery, working alongside government agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the well-being of affected communities.
Their ongoing commitment underscores the importance of coordinated efforts in the face of natural disasters.
