Prosecutor General Receives UNIRMCT Registrar, Reaffirms Ongoing Collaboration

Prosecutor General Angélique Habyarimana today received Abubacarr M. Tambadou, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Registrar of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (UNIRMCT), for a high-level discussion at the NPPA headquarters in Kigali.

The meeting focused on strengthening the continued collaboration between the UN Mechanism and Rwanda’s National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA), particularly in the areas of international justice, information sharing, and accountability for crimes committed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Officials said the discussions reaffirmed both parties’ commitment to supporting ongoing efforts in the fight against impunity and ensuring justice for survivors.

Tambadou, a prominent international lawyer and former Justice Minister of The Gambia, commended Rwanda’s sustained cooperation with the Mechanism and its commitment to upholding international legal standards.

Prosecutor General Habyarimana reiterated Rwanda’s readiness to work closely with the UNIRMCT on pending cases and the tracking of genocide fugitives still at large.

The visit illustrates the enduring partnership between Rwanda and international justice bodies in promoting accountability, truth, and post-conflict reconciliation.
