At a quiet and emotional ceremony in Tanzania’s commercial capital Dar es Salaam, President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan on Sunday rewarded Former First Lady Janeth Magufuli with a posh house.
President Samia said that the former first lady deserved to be protected and supported as she dedicated her efforts to the country during the presidency of her husband.
“My relative Janeth, with mixed feelings I request you today to receive the house on behalf of our beloved, my brother, my boss and my guardian, the late Dr. John Pombe Magufuli,” President Samia said on Sunday at an emotional ceremony.
The Government built the house in accordance with the Political Service Retirement Benefits Act, 1999, as amended in 2005.
“The house will be the permanent settlement for the family, we thank you Mama, this iconic event that you have done to our family, it is a debt to me and by doing so…the only gift from me as the mother of the family is to keep praying for you so that God blesses your daily responsibilities, Janeth Magufuli said.
Janeth Magufuli is an educator who has previously taught in Standard Five; Geography, History and ICT at Mbuyuni Primary School in Dar es Salaam’s Oyster Bay Suburb.
Also Former Firslt Lady Salma Kikwete taught at the same school.
Ex President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli (29 October 1959 – 17 March 2021) was the fifth president of Tanzania, serving from 2015 until his death in 2021.
Tanzania’s tradition
Shortly before his death, former leader Magufuli presented former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi with a newly-built residential house located at Masaki in Dar es Salaam.
Former President Magufuli in 2018 also commissioned construction of a new house for former leader Jakaya Kikwete.
Magufuli, like his predecessors; Jakaya Kikwete, the late Benjamin Mkapa and Ali Hassan Mwinyi, he followed closely his predecessors’ ideas, values and aspirations as set for Tanzania by the founding father of the nation; President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
He promised to fight corruption, develop the country and its economy and launch major works, the very works President Samia Suluhu Hassan is continuing in her slogan of Kazi Iendelee (Work Continues).
