As Rwanda enters the second day of the 30th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against Tutsi, President William Ruto of Kenya has expressed support to Rwandans and commended President Paul Kagame’s leadership.
“Thirty years since the 1994 genocide against Tutsi, the country [Rwanda] has made tremendous progress that demonstrates the total resilience of the people and the government of Rwanda,” Ruto said on Monday via a post on platform X.
He added, “Rwanda is a shining example of the people’s immeasurable power not only to overcome adversity, but also to reconcile and live as one people.”
“I commend my brother, President Paul Kagame, for his resolute leadership, tremendous courage and abundant foresight. The people and government of Kenya wish him and the people of Rwanda godspeed as they continue to build their country to even greater heights,” Ruto said.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday was in Kigali representing President Ruto during the 30th commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi.
The theme for this year’s commemoration, “Remember-Unite-Renew,” encapsulates the imperative of honouring the past, fostering unity, and forging a brighter future.
Gachagua laid a wreath at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in honour of the 1994 Genocide victims.
Gachagua encouraged intermarriages among Africans to bolster regional integration, during his address in Kigali, Rwanda.
“When Rwandans marry Kenyans and vice versa, it enriches our collective heritage,” stated Gachagua.
Kagame commended Kenya on its contribution to the reconstruction of Rwanda after the 1994 Genocide.
Kenya, among other countries, “hosted large members and numbers of Rwandan refugees and gave them a home,” President Kagame noted.
“The contributions you have made to Rwanda’s rebirth are enormous and have helped us to stand where we are now. I want to recognise the few while also asking for forgiveness for not being able to mention all who deserve it,” Kagame said.
