A photo on social media showing Burundi President Evarsite Ndayishimiye carrying a wooden cross as though tracing the footsteps of Biblical Jesus Christ on his way to crucifixion has angered many.
“It hurts seeing our President on a bandwagon of religion instead of finding solutions to the nation’s problems. He doesn’t know his power and responsibilities,” says a one Nobrainer on platform x in reaction to the photo.
In the bible, Gospel of John, Jesus carried his cross to Calvary or Golgotha being the site of the crucifixion outside Jerusalem; “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me,” says Jesus.
President Ndayishimiye a staunch born again Christian has several times featured at religious rallies and sometimes seen preaching the gospel.
Burundi which has shut its borders with Rwanda is one of the poorest countries in the world and politically isolated.
Ndayishimiye who rose to power through a contested vote in 2020 has had little impact in changing the economic situation of his country but intensified brutality of security forces against dissenting voices.
The Burundian leader who has changed nothing of policies inherited from his predecessor has openly teamed up with his Congolese counterpart and the FDLR and are presently engaging in genocidal acts in DR Congo against the Congolese Tutsi.
