Uganda is gearing up for the sixth census scheduled to take place in 2024.
President Yoweri Museveni is expected to officially launch the National Population and Housing Census (NPHC) 2024 at Kololo Independence grounds this afternoon.
Cabinet in August approved the Population and Housing Census to be carried out by Uganda Bureau Statistics.
The East African country has undertaken five population Censuses in the post-independence period.
The most recent, the National Population and Housing Census 2014 was undertaken under the theme ‘Counting for Planning and
Improved Service Delivery’.
The census provides several statistics among them a total population count which is a denominator and key indicator used for resource allocation, measurement of the extent of service delivery, decision making and budgeting among others.
These Final Results contain information about the basic characteristics of the population and the dwellings they live in.
The current population of Uganda is 49,173,497 according to Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data.
However, figures published on the Uganda Bureau Statistics website indicate that Uganda’s population was 34.6 million persons, (2014 Census) with a projection of reaching 45.5 million, (Mid-year 2023).
Statistics also show that of the total population, 48.79% are male while, 51.21% are female according to the (2014 Census).
Uganda has a total area of 241,555 square kilometers. The country borders with Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, DRC, and South Sudan.
