President Kagame Calls Out Failures of Global Sustainability Agenda at ADSW 2025

President Paul Kagame has called out the global sustainability agenda for failing to meet its promises, especially for Africa. Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), he said political commitments are often not followed by action, leaving many countries stuck in debates and blame games.

“The global sustainability agenda as it stands has not yet delivered on its promise, particularly for Africa,” President Kagame said. “Political commitments are not met with action, leaving us with endless debates and finger-pointing. We must learn from the mistakes of the past and move beyond frameworks that keep us in a stalemate.”

ADSW, hosted by H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is one of the world’s leading events on sustainability. This year, it brought together heads of state, policymakers, experts, and industry leaders to discuss solutions to climate and development challenges.

The event also celebrated the 16th edition of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, which honored 11 winners for their innovative solutions in energy, water, health, and food. The prize, inspired by the legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, recognizes impactful projects that help improve lives around the world.

President Kagame pointed out the challenges faced by developing countries, which must balance economic growth with building low-carbon economies. “Sustainability presents us with a dual challenge: we must fast-track development while concurrently building a low-carbon economy,” he said. He urged for affordable and practical technologies that fit the needs of poorer nations.

He also shared Rwanda’s approach to sustainability, which focuses on inclusion, resilience, and working together with others. “Sustainable development is a collective effort, and no nation can do it alone,” he said.

ADSW 2025 tackled issues like energy transitions, climate adaptation, and the role of innovation in solving global problems. President Kagame’s remarks reminded attendees that while sustainability is a global goal, current efforts must do more to address the realities of developing countries. His message was clear: progress requires less talk and more action.
