Rwanda’s Parliament has approved Finance Minister Yusuf Murangwa’s request to secure US$255 million in development loans from the International Development Fund, marking a major step forward in the country’s environmental protection and trade development initiatives.
During an extraordinary plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies, legislators reviewed and endorsed two loan agreements presented by the Finance Minister. The funding package includes three credit facilities: a US$10.8 million initial credit (Credit A), a US$118.2 million facility (Credit B), and an additional US$126 million agreement.
“These loans represent the second phase of our comprehensive strategy to balance environmental conservation with economic growth,” Minister Murangwa told lawmakers during the session. He emphasized that the funding will strengthen Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable development while expanding trade and investment opportunities.
Signed in Kigali on December 21, 2024, the loan agreements underwent thorough parliamentary scrutiny before receiving final approval. The funding is strategically designed to advance Rwanda’s environmental protection programs, boost trade development, promote investment, and encourage sustainable business practices nationwide.
The Minister highlighted that these agreements align with Rwanda’s long-term development strategy, which prioritizes green growth and economic transformation. The structured loans underscore the International Development Fund’s confidence in Rwanda’s economic management and dedication to sustainability.
With parliamentary approval now secured, the implementation phase is set to begin immediately. The Ministry of Finance will soon announce specific projects and timelines, as Rwanda continues to position itself as a regional leader in sustainable development and environmental conservation.
The approved funding is expected to create new opportunities for local and international investors while ensuring that environmental sustainability remains central to Rwanda’s development agenda.
