Cargo transport trucks have been stuck for almost two months along the Gina-Pimbo road in Djugu territory in Ituri,Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to local witnesses, among the blocked vehicles, there are heavy goods vehicles transporting basic necessities, trucks with fuel tanks, public transport cars and those of private individuals.
Not only heavy trucks but even motorcycles have difficulty getting around on national road 27 (Ituri), according to Aksante Dz’rodjo, a biker from the village of Ndjibha.
“The road is really dilapidated. I’ve been here for four days, without moving. No way to move forward, I came from Sobe, no way to squeeze between these hundreds of vehicles on a motorbike. The authorities must do their best to intervene to save this situation. Otherwise, it’s catastrophic!
Road users are bitter and wondering to themselves where the road toll money collected regularly goes and which should be used for the maintenance of this road of economic importance for the province of Ituri.
Abubakar Haruni, a tanker driver, says, “this September 30, I clocked a month at this place. I have not yet arrived even at the Congolese-Ugandan border. The others have been here for two months, they come from Kisangani. Even in Pimbo, very close here, we have not yet arrived.”
“We do not understand why authorities make the population suffer to this extent. They have raised enough money which unfortunately is wasted without putting it into road maintenance. We don’t know who bewitched us,”Abubakar Haruni added.
Furthermore, several observers indicate that most of the roads in this province are in an advanced state of disrepair, since
Since the General Directorate of Revenue of the Province of Ituri (DGRPI) took over the maintenance management of these roads they have become worse.
Previously the roads were managed by the National Road Maintenance Fund (FONER).
