The 5th edition of BRICS games taking place in Karzan, Russia continue to draw more fans as athletes bag medals after medals.
About 89 countries are participating in the sports a two-week event until 23 June. The games are fully funded by the government of Russia.
Athletes are competing in various categories including; Acrobatic Rock and Roll, Athletics, Artistic Gymnastics, Badminton, Basketball Double (online and on court), Belt Wrestling, Boxing, Breaking, Canoeing and Kayaking, Chess, Diving, Fencing, Football Double (online and on court), Gymnastics, Judo, Karate, Kurash, Horse Racing, Rowing, Sambo, Skateboard, Synchronised Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Wushu.
A total of 89 countries and 4,751 athletes are competing for 387 medals (129 gold, 129 silver and 129 bronze) at a record 17 different venues.
The Russian team won 78 gold, 52 silver, and 30 bronze medals in conclusion of the first three days of the BRICS Games in Kazan.
Russians won 38 gold, 28 silver, and 15 bronze medals on Saturday. The Belarusian team ranks second with 13 gold, 26 silver, and 28 bronze medals. The China’s team is third with 11 gold, 9 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
On June 16, 51 medal events will be held at the BRICS Games. The competition will end on June 23.
A total of 15 countries have formally applied to join the BRICS: Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Senegal, Thailand, Venezuela, Vietnam and Yemen.
In addition, the following countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS: Angola, Cameroon, Colombia, Comoros, DR Congo, Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Indonesia, Jamaica, Libya, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Suriname, Serbia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Somalia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
