More than 16,000 people displaced by war currently camping at former Monusco base in Bijombo in South Kivu are currently living in fear after Monusco withdrew from the base.
The military authorities of the Sukola II Operational Sector confirmed that they have dispatched units to protect the camp for the safety of the population.
According to the administrator of the territory of Uvira, Julie Malenga Sango, Monusco closed its base in Bijombo on Sunday January 15, 2023.
She says, last year, the UN mission announced the closure of its bases in the high and medium plateaus of these three territories.
“These are the bases of Bibokoboko in the territory of Fizi and Kahololo in Uvira which preceded that of Bijombo,” she said.
However, according to Bwija Kelvin, coordinator of the civil society of compatriots, several armed groups are in this environment and threaten the safety of these displaced people.
Yves Wa Yves Ramadhani of the network of human rights defenders in Uvira-Fizi and Mwenga, said that the displaced feared the incursions of armed groups into their camps.
