Authorities in Ngoma District have arrested a man, Nziza, from Rukumberi Sector, on suspicion of murdering and beheading 66-year-old Pauline Nduwamungu at her home on November 14, 2024. The arrest was made by the Rwanda National Police in collaboration with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
Nziza reportedly told investigators that he beheaded the victim to avoid being identified, claiming he had been told that “when you kill someone while looking them in the eye, your image remains imprinted in their eyes.”
The chilling details of the case have left the community in shock, as investigators work to uncover the full story. RIB spokesperson, Dr. Thierry B. Murangira, revealed that the motive for the crime remains unclear. One line of inquiry is whether Nduwamungu was targeted because she was a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
“At this stage, we cannot confirm or deny whether her survival during the genocide was a factor in her murder. The investigation will reveal the truth,” Dr. Murangira said.
Authorities are also examining whether Nziza acted alone or had accomplices. “Our priority is to ensure that anyone who played a role in this horrific act is identified and held accountable,” Dr. Murangira assured.
As the investigation continues, Dr. Murangira extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, emphasizing that justice would prevail.
The gruesome nature of the crime has shaken the local community, highlighting the destructive impact of superstitions and unfounded beliefs that some claim can lead to such acts of violence. Meanwhile, the family of Pauline Nduwamungu is left grappling with an unimaginable loss, as the nation watches closely for answers and accountability.
