The Kigali Golf Club Captain Andrew Kulayige announces the highly anticipated President’s Cup and Muema Challenge are scheduled for this Friday and Saturday and organized by the Rwanda Golf Union.
The event will welcome over 180 amateur golfers from across East Africa, marking a significant milestone in promoting Rwanda as a premier golfing destination.
The tournament will feature players from Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia. This year’s President’s Cup edition is particularly special as it includes the Muema Challenge, being held outside Kenya for the first time in its 10-year history. The challenge is spearheaded by Muema Muindi, the current chairman of Karen Country Club in Nairobi, and will take place alongside the President’s Cup.
“We are thrilled to host over 180 players for this year’s President’s Cup, along with the Muema Challenge, here in Kigali,” said Andrew Kulayige, the Club’s Captain. “Bringing the Muema Challenge to Rwanda highlights the growing appeal of our golfing facilities. This tournament not only elevates the standard of amateur golf in the region but also strengthens our commitment to promoting golf tourism as part of the ‘Visit Rwanda’ campaign.”
The President’s Cup offers some of the most exciting prizes in the history of amateur golf in Rwanda. A key highlight is the “Hole-in-One” challenge, where the winner will drive away in a brand-new car, while another player stands to win a grand cash prize of Rwf 20 million.
Amb. Bill Kayonga, President of the Rwanda Golf Union, praised Marcel Byusa, the President of Kigali Golf Club’s efforts in enhancing the tournament’s profile. “I congratulate the President of Kigali Golf Club for elevating the President’s Cup to attract players from across East Africa,” Kayonga stated. “These efforts are crucial in showcasing Rwanda’s potential as a golfing destination on the global stage.”
The event has been made possible through the support of prominent sponsors, including Bralirwa Plc, Canal+, Cleo, Simba Supermarket, Rwanda Ultimate Golf Course Ltd (RUGC), Convene Africa, and Serena Hotel, whose contributions have played a vital role in bringing this grand event to life.
Donel Rama, Golf Operations Manager at Kigali Golf Resort and Villas, expressed confidence in delivering a top-tier experience for all participants. “Our team is fully prepared to ensure a smooth and enjoyable tournament. We are committed to providing an exceptional golfing experience that will leave a lasting impression on all our guests,” Rama said.
The President’s Cup is not just a competition but part of a broader initiative to promote Rwanda as a leading destination for golf tourism. With the Kigali Golf Resort and Villas at its centre, the country aims to attract more international golfers and tourists.
“The involvement of regional players and the introduction of the Muema Challenge demonstrate Rwanda’s dedication to growing our golf scene and promoting sports tourism,” added Eugene Murenjekha the tournament Director and Vice Captain of the Kigali Golf Club. “We are looking forward to a weekend of exciting golf, camaraderie, and regional unity.”
The tournament is expected to draw golf enthusiasts from across the region, fostering friendly competition and regional collaboration. As the Kigali Golf Resort and Villas prepare to welcome golfers from across East Africa, the President’s Cup and Muema Challenge are set to become landmark events in the region’s amateur golf calendar.
The event will tee off on Friday morning, promising a weekend filled with thrilling matches, exceptional sportsmanship, and a celebration of amateur golf talent across East Africa.
