President Paul Kagame has called on Rwanda’s lawmakers to prioritize integrity and the nation’s welfare as they embark on their legislative duties. Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected senators, Kagame highlighted the critical role they play in shaping the country’s future.
“You are here not just to serve as individuals but to serve this country, to protect its interests, and to ensure that every Rwandan citizen benefits from the laws and policies you will help shape,” Kagame said in his address.
The ceremony was also marked by the re-election of François-Xavier Kalinda as Senate President. Kalinda, who has led the Senate since January 2023, was re-elected unopposed, securing 25 out of 26 votes, with one vote deemed invalid. His leadership is expected to continue guiding the Senate through key legislative processes.
In addition, Dr. Alvera Mukabaramba was unanimously elected as Vice President in charge of Finance and Administration. Dr. Mukabaramba, who served in the same role during the Third Senate, brings continuity and experience in financial oversight and administration. Her re-election was met with broad support, reflecting confidence in her capabilities.
Ambassador Solina Nyirahabimana, a seasoned diplomat and former Cabinet minister, was elected unopposed as Vice President in charge of Legislature and Government Oversight. She received unanimous support from all 26 senators, a testament to her respected track record and dedication to ensuring governmental transparency and accountability.
President Kagame used the occasion to underscore the necessity for unity and collaboration between the Senate and other branches of government, particularly the executive and judiciary. He urged senators to work together to address national challenges and promote sustainable development.
“There can be no tolerance for corruption at any level of government,” Kagame asserted. “It is your duty to ensure that public resources are managed with the utmost transparency and accountability.”
The President also reflected on Rwanda’s significant strides in various sectors, including health, education, and infrastructure, but reminded lawmakers that the journey toward full development is ongoing. He stressed the need for continued efforts to reduce poverty, create job opportunities, and ensure equitable growth.
“Rwanda has come a long way, but our journey is far from over,” Kagame noted. “As leaders, you must remain committed to the principles of justice, equality, and fairness. These are the foundations upon which our nation is built, and they must guide every decision you make.”
The re-elected Senate leadership is now set to steer the Upper House as it tackles pressing legislative agendas in the coming term.
