Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo may soon hold talks which could culminate in signing an agreement that could pave way for resumption of relations.
President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço revealed during the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA.
He said that he has made a proposal for an agreement that “will lead to a summit to sign the final peace agreement and allow the resumption of relations between Kinshasa and Kigali.”
The Angolan leader also Chairperson of the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) was appointed by the African Union to mediate between DRC and Rwanda as tensions flared over resurgence of M23 rebellion.
According to President Lourenço, the main objective of this proposal will be to reach an agreement that “will lead to a summit to sign the final peace agreement and allow the resumption of relations between Kinshasa and Kigali”.
“Within the framework of the Luanda process, it was possible to achieve a ceasefire in Eastern DRC, a ceasefire that came into force on August 4 of this year. In order to consolidate the progress made, Angola made a proposal for a peace agreement in cooperation DRC and Rwanda,” he said.
“The provisions of the agreement were reviewed by the parties at ministerial level with the aim of reaching an agreement that will lead to the holding of a summit to sign the definitive peace agreement and to allow a resumption of relations between the DRC and Rwanda,” João Lourenço said.
