President Paul Kagame has expressed his frustration over the power issues at the FIFA-funded Kigali Pelé Stadium, which currently lacks the capacity to host night matches due to an inadequate generator.
The problem came to light following a report by The Chronicles, which revealed that an internal audit by Kigali City and the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) found the stadium’s generator unable to power the facility’s lighting system for night games.
In response to the report, the City of Kigali acknowledged the issue, stating, “The generator we have at Kigali Pelé Stadium is not able to power all the lights sufficiently for night games. However, if the teams playing have the capability to bring an additional generator, they are allowed to play at night.”
The city also mentioned that a new generator with the required capacity has been ordered and is expected to arrive in Rwanda within the next three months.
Reacting to the city’s statement, Kagame criticized the situation, saying, “This should NOT have happened in the first place.”
The stadium, which has been approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is a crucial part of Rwanda’s sports infrastructure.
The inability to host night matches has raised concerns about the management of the facility and the oversight involved in its operation.
