All students are today taking off a short break from their daily routine classes as teachers across Rwanda celebrate a day dedicated to them.
At National level, Teachers Day celebrations will be held at BK Arena in the capital Kigali, with over 6000 teachers expected to attend.
The 2022 World Teachers’ Day is being celebrated under the theme; “The transformation of education begins with teachers”.
The education ministry has however not provided details of the Teachers Day celebrations that will also be observed across all the 30 districts that make up the country.
Meanwhile, World Teachers’ Day established in 1994, is held annually on 5 October to celebrate the work of teachers.
It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
“On World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate the critical role of teachers in transforming learners’ potential by ensuring they have the tools they need to take responsibility for themselves, for others and for the planet. We call on countries to ensure that teachers are trusted and recognized as knowledge producers, reflective practitioners, and policy partners,” according to a statement from UNESCO.
