Einat Weiss, Israel’s Ambassador to Rwanda, handed over two ultrasound machines to AVEGA, an organization supporting widows of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The machines will be used to examine pregnant women and improve maternal health care.
Alphonsine Manzi Mukarugema, AVEGA’s Deputy Chairperson, expressed gratitude to Israel and its ambassador for their continued support in various sectors, including healthcare. She emphasized AVEGA’s mission to ensure genocide widows age with dignity by addressing their needs, including access to healthcare, housing, and social support.
Mukarugema shared with Ambassador Weiss the challenges faced by women survivors of the genocide, particularly in raising their own children and often taking in orphans of others. She highlighted the nurturing nature of women, who extend love and care beyond their immediate families.
“In this journey, we’ve found friends, including the Israeli Embassy, which has stood by us,” Mukarugema said. However, she noted that many genocide survivors are now elderly, making their care more critical than ever.
Dr. Claudine Uwera Kanyamanza, representing the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement, commended the partnership between Israel and Rwanda in building resilience among Rwandans. She acknowledged the sacrifices made by widows who raised their children and others, describing their courage as both heartbreaking and inspiring.
Kanyamanza assured the survivors and the Israeli Embassy that the collaboration would continue, fostering greater resilience within Rwandan communities.
Ambassador Weiss praised the resilience and self-reliance of genocide survivors, particularly the women who have cared for others despite their personal losses. She emphasized that aging does not signify weakness but rather highlights the positive impact these women have had on younger generations.
She also noted the importance of the donated ultrasound machines, which will help doctors monitor fetal development, ensuring healthy births. Weiss reiterated that the bond between Israel and Rwanda is deeper than typical diplomatic relations, calling it a connection of “blood ties.”
“While no country chooses its neighbors, we choose the relationships we build. The partnership between Israel and Rwanda is based on shared values and deep connections,” she said.
Israel collaborates with Rwanda in various fields, including healthcare, technology, education, and security.
