The National Electoral Commission has announced the preliminary results of the 2024 Senate elections, held across the country today.
Citizens turned out in large numbers to elect 12 senators representing various local administrative entities.
In Kigali City and the surrounding areas, voter turnout was reported at an impressive 97.02%.
The vote counting process commenced immediately after polls closed at 1:00 PM, with early results revealing the elected senators from the Northern and Southern provinces.
In the Northern Province, Laetitia Nyinawamwiza led with 246 votes, securing 73.00% of the vote, followed by Amandin Rugira who garnered 211 votes, equivalent to 62.61%.
Meanwhile, in the Southern Province Adrie Umuhire took the lead with 300 votes, capturing 70.42% of the total.
Pelagie Uwera came in second with 268 votes (62.91%), and Sosthène Cyitatire followed closely with 263 votes (61.74%).
The elections are an integral part of Rwanda’s legislative structure, ensuring broad representation in the Senate, which plays a critical role in reviewing legislation and overseeing national governance.
