Great Lakes Region Leaders Convene in Kinshasa For Summit

Heads of State and Government of the Member States of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) are  gathered in DRC’s capital, Kinshasa for the ninth ordinary summit (June 16th to 20th).

The DRC is preparing to take over the rotating presidency. Angola is currently holding the presidency for four years exceeding the legal mandate of two years.

Ambassador João Samuel Caholo, Executive Secretary of the ICGLR, is expected in Kinshasa for discussions with Congolese authorities regarding the organization of these meetings.

This summit will focus on the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation (PSC) Framework for the DRC and the region.

The event is convened by the ICGLR, with support from the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The summit in Kinshasa will address various issues related to the PSC Framework, including updates on the implementation of National Roadmaps and regional initiatives to combat the illegal exploitation of natural resources.

The discussions will also cover topics such as mineral value addition, the Analytical Fingerprint (AFP) Project, and the official launch of the ICGLR Certificate by Uganda.

The ICGLR organization is composed of twelve member states: Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, the Republic of South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
