The government has expanded the coverage of its community-based health insurance scheme, commonly known as Mutuelle de Santé, to include a range of advanced medical services.
The announcement, made this week, means that Rwandans enrolled in the scheme will now benefit from coverage for specialized treatments that were previously excluded or required out-of-pocket payments.
Among the newly covered services are kidney transplants, cancer treatment, heart disease care, and blood purification procedures. The package also includes complex surgeries such as knee operations, spinal surgeries, and the replacement of damaged leg bones.
In addition, the updated coverage includes orthopedic and prosthetic devices, blood components like plasma and red blood cells, and some essential medications that were not reimbursed before.
Health authorities say the decision is aimed at improving access to life-saving treatments and reducing the financial burden on households. It is also part of a broader strategy to enhance the quality and scope of healthcare within Rwanda and reduce the need for patients to seek advanced care abroad.
The expansion of Mutuelle de Santé has been welcomed by citizens and health professionals alike, with many praising it as a significant step toward inclusive and affordable healthcare for all Rwandans.
