The security situation in the DRC capital Kinshasa has been heightened following a failed coup d’état on Sunday May 19.
According to Kinshasa government, the country’s Police (PNC) and army (FARDC) launched mixed patrols throughout Kinshasa on the night of Tuesday. There is heavy military presence in Kinshasa, the capital city Kinshasa.
The joint security patrol decision was taken during a security meeting held by the Commissioner General of the Congolese National Police, Benjamin Alongaboni and the regional commander of the FARDC.
The provincial commissioner of the Congolese national police, Blaise Kilimbalimba, who officially launched these patrols, said that the objective is to strengthen the security of people and their property in the context of the failed coup.
Meanwhile, a few weeks ago, the Minister of Interior launched an operation codenamed the “Black Panther” that aims at reducing insecurity via the “Kuluna” delinquent track.
This Sunday, May 19, the spokesperson for the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Brig’ Gen. Sylvain Ekenge, announced on Congolese national radio and television (RTNC) that a group of heavily armed men had attempted to overthrow government.
The leader of the failed coup and other armed men were arrested.
According to sources, these supporters of the coup d’état also attacked the residence of the former Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Economy and candidate for the presidency of the National Assembly Vital Kamerhe, causing the death of two police officers.
