Chaos Erupts at Job Interview Event in India as Hundreds Jostle for Ten Vacancies

A chaotic scene unfolded in Bharuch, Gujarat city of India, as hundreds of job seekers crowded a venue for an interview event, leading to the collapse of a steel railing and the subsequent fall of several people.

The incident, which occurred at Lords Plaza Hotel in Ankleshwar, highlighted the intense competition for a mere ten job openings at a private engineering company.

Hundreds of hopeful candidates gathered at the hotel, jostling to enter the venue and secure an interview slot.

The crowd was so dense that it pushed against a steel railing, causing it to give way and take several people down with it. Fortunately, none of the individuals sustained serious injuries as the railing was not far off the ground.

Videos of the incident, which have since gone viral, depict a lengthy queue snaking up two flights of stairs into the hotel’s entrance, with many more candidates looking on.

As the crowd outside the door swelled, pressure against the railing increased, leading to its collapse. Anticipating the fall, two aspirants jumped down, while at least six others fell with the railing.

Officials reported that approximately 1,800 people showed up for the open interview on Monday, vying for ten vacancies advertised by an engineering company based in the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation complex in Jhagadia.

The incident has sparked political controversy, with the Congress party criticizing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the growing unemployment and questioning the effectiveness of the much-vaunted Gujarat model.

The Congress took to social media, stating that the viral videos exposed the shortcomings of the Gujarat model, which the BJP is now imposing on the entire country.

Mansukh Vasava, a BJP Member of Parliament from Bharuch, deflected the blame onto the company, stating that it should have specified the criteria for the job openings more clearly instead of holding an open interview.

“At some level, the incident occurred because of the company. We are worried about it and steps are being taken to ensure such incidents don’t happen again,” he said in Hindi.

The chaotic scenes at the job interview event in Bharuch have underscored the fierce competition for limited job opportunities in Gujarat.

As political parties trade blame, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address unemployment and ensure safer, more organized recruitment processes.
