Burundi’s Internal Security Minister Cements Agathon Rwasa’s Political Death

Martin Niteretse Burundi’s Minister of the Interior, Community Development and Public Security has officially cemented the total collapse of Agathon Rwasa from leadership of main opposition party CNL.

Niteretse, announced on Monday, March 18, that he takes note of the minutes of the extraordinary congress held in Ngozi on March 10 and acknowledges the results from this meeting organised by Agathon Rwasa’s detractors.

“We take note of the report and the decisions taken on the occasion of this extraordinary congress of the CNL party held on March 10, 2024 in Ngozi, in particular the election of Nestor Girukwishaka as president and legal representative of the CNL party as well as the implementation in place of the new political office, the minutes of which have been authenticated by the notary,” Minister Niteretse wrote in a statment.

Among the personalities copied in this correspondence, include; the provincial governors, the mayor of the city of Bujumbura, the general director of NGO Coordination, Nestor Girukwishaka, an act of recognition of the conclusions of the extraordinary congress held in Ngozi on March 10 , under high security, results rejected by Agathon Rwasa.

Contacted, Simon Bizimungu, a loyalist of Rwasa, indicates what the Minister of the Interior has just done is not a surprise. “To see the pace and evolution of things, the CNL party was already expecting this.”

Described as a pseudo-congress by Agathon Rwasa, he announced his desire to organize an extraordinary inclusive congress, as the Minister of the Interior had recommended in his correspondence.
