AFC/M23 Yet to Open Bukavu Border

Senior authorities of the AFC/M23 alliance are holding a strategic meeting that sources say will usher in a new administration for Bukavu city, Taarifa reliably reports from Rusiszi on the Rwandan side of the Border.

Dozens of cadres of the AFC/M23 alliance on Sunday travelled by boat from Goma to Bukavu to attend the ongoing meeting which could last longer today.

Dozens of people are anxiously waiting on the Rwandan side of the Border. They expect to cross back and forth to continue with trading while others want to return home.

“The border may be opened later today or tomorrow,” a source within the power circles of the alliance told Taarifa.

Meanwhile, the population on the DRC side can be seen going on with their daily work amidst lull while on the Rwandan side, trading is ongoing though not as busy as during the open border.

The Congolese government on Friday confirmed that the M23 rebels had taken control of Bukavu, the second-largest city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Bernard Byamungu, a leader of fighters that overrun Bukavu, stood in front of the Governor’s office office and promised, “We are going to clean up the disorder left over from the old regime,” Byamungu said to a small cheering crowd, telling them they had been living in a “jungle”.

Lawrence Kanyuka the Spokesperson of AFC/M23 (Congo River Alliance, a coalition of militias including M23) said after the rebels seized Bukavu, ” “We call on the population to remain in control of their city and not give in to panic.”
