President Paul Kagame on Monday received a delegation from one of West Africa’s most powerful traditional kingdoms at Urugwiro Village, in a meeting that signals Rwanda’s growing interest in forging economic partnerships beyond conventional state-to-state diplomacy.
The delegation was led by HRH Prince Oheneba Yaw Otchere, Royal Ambassador of the Asantehene, His Majesty the king of the Asante Kingdom of Ghana.
Discussions focused on strengthening ties between Rwanda and the Ashanti Kingdom, with particular emphasis on trade, investment and mineral trading.
The Asante Kingdom, based in Kumasi in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, is one of Africa’s most historically significant and economically influential traditional institutions.
The Asantehene commands considerable authority over land, commerce and cultural affairs across a vast constituency, and the kingdom has increasingly positioned itself as a serious player in continental business and diplomacy.
The meeting at Urugwiro is notable for what it represents as much as what was discussed.
Rwanda has in recent years cultivated relationships with traditional rulers, diaspora networks and non-state actors as part of a broader strategy to open investment corridors and expand its commercial reach across Africa.
Minerals; in which both Rwanda and the Asante region have significant interests, appear to be a central plank of the emerging relationship.
