Gospel music star Israel Mbonyi has shared insights into his life, music career, and the story behind his annual Christmas concert ICYAMBU, during a press briefing held early in the morning at the Kigali Convention Center.

Mbonyi explained that although he studied Pharmacy, music had always been his true calling. He said he began composing songs while still in school and found his greatest joy singing and playing instruments in church, long before imagining the level of success he enjoys today.

“I never thought it would reach this level,” Mbonyi said. “I imagined myself singing at home with friends, not performing on such big stages.”

He also spoke about the origin of the name ICYAMBU, revealing that as a child he disliked his full name, Israel Mbonyicyambu, and even changed it at one point. However, after understanding its meaning and receiving a song titled Icyambu through spiritual inspiration, the name became central to his identity and brand.

Mbonyi further revealed how he unexpectedly began producing Swahili gospel songs, saying the idea came to him in a dream in April 2023 while preparing his fourth album, Umusirikare. That moment led to the creation of his first Swahili song.

Explaining why December 25 was chosen for ICYAMBU, Mbonyi said the decision came after encouragement from close friends who convinced him that hosting the concert at BK Arena was possible, despite his initial doubts.

Addressing social media rumors claiming he has a hidden child, Mbonyi dismissed the allegations, stating that his private life is not subject to public explanation.

Mbonyi is set to headline ICYAMBU Season 4 at BK Arena, marking the fourth edition of the highly anticipated Christmas concert, whose tickets often sell out due to overwhelming demand.
