Rwanda’s first-ever Silverback Motorbike Tour came to a close on Sunday, September 7, after a week-long ride that brought together bikers from Uganda, Zimbabwe, the UK, and Rwanda.
Organized by Silverback Event Management, the tour covered scenic routes linking Kigali, Musanze, and Rubavu, blending adventure with cultural immersion and conservation. The event coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Kwita Izina Gorilla Naming Ceremony.
“It actually exceeded our goals and expectations,” said Ignatius Mugabo, Chairman of Silverback Event Management. “The link with tourism and Kwita Izina was incredible. The success of this maiden tour proves it can only grow bigger.”
Participants praised Rwanda’s clean roads and smooth organization. “Rwanda really has the best roads in Africa,” said Jonathan Travis from Uganda. “The ride was not just about biking — it opened my eyes to the importance of conservation.”
Riders also enjoyed cultural exchanges, including traditional drumming and dancing at Red Rocks Cultural Center in Musanze.
The tour was supported by Airtel Rwanda, SPAR Supermarket, Kikao Lounge, Rwanda Development Board, Rwanda Convention Bureau, and several hotels and resorts. Organizers say planning for the next edition will start immediately, with the aim of attracting more bikers from across the world.
“This is the first time we’ve turned motorbikes into a tourism and conservation product,” Mugabo added. “It’s a new addition to Rwanda’s tourism offerings, and we’re only getting started.”
