ZachXBT a pseudonymous American blockchain investigator and open-source intelligence researcher has revealed that French regional bank Credit Mutuel Arkea has lost over U$133million to hackers in a meticulous cyber attack.
The attack orchestrated on Wednesday allowed fraudulent transactions amounting to around 100 million euros (U$112 million).
Hackers gained access to Arkea’s account to make transfers to other banks, not the accounts of clients, who did not suffer any losses.
“The attackers used the platform of one of our service providers and thus reached Crédit Mutuel Arkéa directly,” the group clarifies.
It also dismisses the theory of “human error” within its teams and suggests “a sophisticated attack originating from outside the bank.”
Which banks are involved and belong to the Crédit Mutuel – Arkéa group?
Historically, the group comprises two Crédit Mutuel branches: Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne and Crédit Mutuel Sud-Ouest.
The other Crédit Mutuel branches belong to a different group.
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa also includes the life insurance specialist Suravenir and the online bank Fortuneo.
