The AFC/M23 rebels on Friday lost Mahanga in Masisi territory in North Kivu after intense fighting against coalition of FARDC and wazalendo militia.

Fighting for control of this major locality began on Wednesday when the government coalition launched an offensive against positions held by the rebels in this area of the Osso Banyungu sector.

The clashes continued until Friday, before the AFC/M23 rebels were dislodged from Mahanga, an agglomeration considered strategic because of its position in this part of the Masisi territory.

Following these battles, the security situation remains fragile.

Sources have told Taarifa that Congolese army and Wazalendo militia are reinforcing their presence and consolidating their positions in the area.

The situation remains volatile in Mahanga and the surrounding areas, against a backdrop of persistent fighting between the two sides.
