Tanga Port in Tanzania is positioned to become Rwanda’s favourite logistical link for the movement of commercial goods to and from landlocked Rwanda.

Gen.Patrick Nyamvumba, Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania took a guided tour at Tanga Port facility with the aim of assessing operations and exploring further opportunities for enhancing trade cooperation.

Gen. Nyamvumba said Tanga Port has become an important logistical link for the movement of commercial goods to and from Rwanda, stressing the need to further strengthen bilateral trade cooperation between the two countries.

The Rwandan envoy commended the Port efficiency in handling Rwandan cargo. He noted that the port performance has encouraged Rwanda to continue relying on the facility for its import and export needs.

According to the acting Manager of Tanga Port, Peter Millanzi, Rwanda remains one of the key users of the port, with goods such as coils, vehicles, machinery and petroleum products regularly passing through the facility.

Why Rwanda Switched to Ports in Tanzania

The 2019 diplomatic fallout between Rwanda and Uganda led to a prolonged border closure as the two sides failed to iron out their differences.

Both countries traded accusations of interference in each other’s affairs.

However, after rigorous diplomatic engagements the main Gatuna–Katuna border was officially reopened on January 31, 2022, and full cross-border movements and trade have since normalized.
