Power generated from the newly built Rusumo falls Hydropower is now injected into Rwanda’s national grid according to the Ministry of Infrastructure.
Located in Kirehe District, Eastern Province at the Border Rwanda-Tanzania, Rusumo Hydropower plant generates a total of 80 mega watts of electricity that will be shared between Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
Of the 80MW generated from the hydropower plant, 27MW is now injected into the national grid of Rwanda. Most of this electricity will be used to power one of Rwanda’s mega projects including the U$2 billion Bugesera International Airport.
The Power plant funded by (World Bank, African Development Bank, KFW, Netherlands Government), consists of concrete dam with crest length of 150m,Headrace Tunnel of 460m and a surface power station with 3*30MW Kaplan turbines.
The joint development was entered by the three governments through a Tripartite Agreement signed on 16th February, 2012.
The power production facilities are located entirely on the south side of the bank of the Kagera River in Tanzania, while the substation is located on the northern side of the bank of the river in Rwanda.
The U$340 million project is one of the investment programmes under the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) with a mandate to facilitate jointly agreed transformative regional trans-boundary cooperative projects, or in-country projects with regional impact, related to the common use of the Nile Basin water resources.
