Newly born babies in Uganda will undergo mandatory DNA testing to immediately determine their real parents.

This announcement seemingly throwing a spanner into wheels has ignited widespread debate in Uganda.

“We shall put DNA test kits in every maternity ward. If a child is born, the biological father and mother should be identified immediately,” Said Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu the state Minister of Internal Affairs.

Kamuntu revealed that government plans to introduce DNA testing kits in every maternity ward.

“If a child is born, the biological father and mother should be immediately known, “Prof. Kamuntu said.

He made the remarks on Sunday at an event in South western district Sheema in the presence of President Yoweri Museveni.

The proposed introduction of mandatory DNA testing of kids has been triggered by growing numbers of men that seek DNA test services only to find out that they are raising children not biologically theirs.

Government considers the DNA testing as a solution to paternity disputes, privacy, consent, cultural attitudes and it’s potential impact on trust within families.
