A shoe trader operating at GOICO Plaza in Musanze District reportedly lost merchandise worth Rwf18 million when fire engulfed the commercial building on Saturday, October 10.
Dukundimana Johnson said his sister, who sold shoes at the market, lost all her stock in the blaze. “My sister lost property worth Rwf18 million,” he said.
The fire broke out at around 3 p.m. and spread from the upper floors of the five-storey building, where tailors and second-hand clothing traders operated. Witnesses said property management had been carrying out roofing work to fix leaks ahead of the rainy season, and suspected welding sparks may have ignited nearby clothing.
Authorities have not confirmed the cause or linked the renovation work to the fire.
The Northern Province Private Sector Federation chairperson said more than 2,000 traders worked in the market, which attracted about 12,000 visitors daily.
He said the losses were still being assessed.
About 12 people who reportedly suffered shock were taken to Ruhengeri Hospital for medical attention. Officials reported no deaths.
The total value of the goods and other property destroyed has not been announced.
