Rwanda forecast to receive up to 105mm of rain in second half of October

Meteo Rwanda has forecast between 22 and 105 millimetres of rain across the country in the second half of October, with rainfall expected on four to six days, depending on the location.

The forecast rainfall is within the usual range for this time of year. Temperatures are expected to be slightly above normal, with daytime highs of 22°C to 32°C and night-time lows of 10°C to 20°C. The average temperatures for the period typically range from 20°C to 31°C during the day and 10°C to 19°C at night.

The highest rainfall totals, between 85mm and 105mm, are forecast in Rubavu and Musanze districts, much of Nyamasheke and Nyabihu, and parts of Karongi, Gakenke, Rutsiro, Burera and Rusizi.

Rainfall of 60mm to 85mm is expected in Nyaruguru and much of the Western Province, as well as parts of Burera, Muhanga, Nyamagabe, Gakenke, Huye, Ruhango, Nyagatare and Gicumbi.

Kigali, Rwamagana and several other areas are forecast to receive between 40mm and 60mm. The rest of the country is expected to receive between 22mm and 40mm.

Winds of 8 to 12 metres per second are expected in parts of Karongi, Rutsiro, Nyamasheke, Nyamagabe, Ngororero, Nyabihu and Rubavu. Winds of 4 to 6 metres per second are forecast in Kigali, Bugesera, Rwamagana and parts of several other districts, while most remaining areas are expected to experience winds of 6 to 8 metres per second.

Daytime temperatures of 30°C to 32°C are forecast in Bugesera, much of Kigali and parts of Ngoma, Rwamagana and Nyagatare, as well as in parts of Kirehe, the Amayaga region and the Bugarama Valley. The coolest daytime conditions, at 22°C to 24°C, are expected in parts of Musanze and Nyabihu.

Night-time lows of 10°C to 12°C are forecast in parts of Nyabihu, Musanze, Nyaruguru, Nyamagabe and Rusizi. In parts of Kigali, Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Kayonza, Kirehe, Bugesera, Rwamagana and Ngoma, temperatures could reach 16°C to 19°C.

Meteo Rwanda advised residents, particularly those in areas expected to experience stronger winds, to take precautions against risks associated with rain and wind and follow guidance from the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA).
