London Gold Body Enables Violence at Tanzania’s North Mara Mine

The United Kingdom’s London Bullion Market Association’s certification program is under fire for propelling Violence at a gold mine in Tanzania.

In 2019, a scandalous police shooting at the Canadian-owned North Mara gold mine left two Tanzanian 23-year old male miners dead.

The incident led to a protracted court battle between the families of victims and LBMA.

LBMA is facing trial after it was sued by the families of two men.Lawyers for the two families argue that the gold body’s decisions had a direct effect on the use of violence at the mine.

The LBMA which oversees the global London gold market is being accused of negligently or wrongfully certified gold from the North Mara mine as “clean” and “responsible gold” despite documented human rights abuses and killings connected to the site.

The cases which has dragged on is considered a ground-breaking challenge that could test the legal accountability of voluntary corporate and industry certification schemes across global supply chains.
