Ethiopia’s Abiy Ahmed Re-elected Premeir For 5-year Term

For another 5 years, Abiy Ahmed is extending his rule of the federal republic of Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Parliament on October 5 saw ruling Prosperity Party win 438 out of 547 seats during the general election held in June 2026.

Abiy Ahmed is hereby appointed as the prime minister of Ethiopia,” the newly elected speaker of parliament, Ahmed Shide, announced in a televised session.

Abiy pledged to boost Ethiopia’s regional standing and work toward securing direct access to the sea.

His domestic agenda targets national security, economic growth, and the continuation of broad reform initiatives.

Ahmed effectively took oath of office, officially launching his mandate for the new governmental term.

Abiy’s new administration will face challenges of new fighting between the country’s armed forces and the recently-formed Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival armed group, in a bid to topple the government.

Abiy Ahmed, who first came to power in 2018 and this is his third term.

The new parliamentary term officially opened on October 5, 2026, paving the way for the formation of Abiy’s new government.

“Your new mandate by Ethiopia House of People’s Representatives is a vote of confidence in your leadership and vision you have for your country,” Kenya President William Ruto said in reaction to Abiy’s re-election as Ethiopia’s prime minister.

“I wish you continued success as you lead Ethiopia to achieve its transformation agenda,” Ruto said.
