Six cases of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) have been detected in North Kivu Province, according to AFC/M23 authorities.

The politico-military leadership of the AFC/M23 convened a meeting October 2nd in the provincial Capital, Goma to assess the epidemiological situation and take the urgent measures necessary to strengthen the response.

It has emerged that of these cases, four were detected in Alimbongo and two in Kayna, North Kivu.

The rebel administration said that Investigations indicate that detected cases are linked to an imported contamination from Butembo.

“Four cases were detected following post-mortem sample collections, while two symptomatic patients are currently receiving care,” the rebels said.

The rebels said that Health teams are intensifying surveillance, the search for suspected cases, as well as the identification and follow-up of individuals who have been in contact with confirmed cases, with the aim of rapidly interrupting the chain of transmission.
