Sony masterclass to follow Kigali session with filmmaker Kavila Matu

A Sony masterclass planned for October 16 will build on a Kigali session that brought Nairobi-based editor and director Kavila Matu together with local creators and storytellers.

Matu, who is visiting Rwanda for a production, met the group at an event organised by Rwanda Cinema Centre and Kwetu Film Institute.

The organisers described it as a chance to exchange ideas ahead of the masterclass and called it a “refreshing start to the week.”

Matu is a longtime collaborator of filmmaker Eric Kabera and British filmmaker Nick Hughes.

Their work together includes 100 Days, the 2001 film directed by Hughes and produced by Hughes and Kabera, with Matu as editor.

The film was among the first feature productions made in Rwanda to portray the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The partnership has also produced Through My Eyes, a film about Rwandan youth directed by Matu, and other projects including Keepers of Memory, The Woman Me and Her Right.

Rwanda Cinema Centre and Kwetu said Matu and Hughes have collaborated with them for more than 30 years on many of their major productions.

They also recalled earlier CNN footage filmed by a collaborator identified only as Steve, documenting construction of Vision City and the Kigali Convention Centre.

Kabera founded Rwanda Cinema Centre and Kwetu Film Institute to support filmmaking and train emerging practitioners.

The upcoming masterclass continues that work by creating an opportunity for local storytellers to learn from experienced professionals.
