A delegation of generals, senior military officers and faculty members from Ghana’s National Defence College is in Rwanda for a week-long study visit aimed at gaining insights into the country’s experience in national security, cohesion and development.
Led by the college’s Deputy Commandant, Brig Gen Eric Kodo Konadu, the delegation was received on Tuesday, September 22, by Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Chief of Defence Staff, Gen MK Mubarakh, at RDF Headquarters in Kimihurura.
The delegation is in Rwanda from September 21 to 27, 2026, as part of an experiential research study tour designed to expose the participants to Rwanda’s institutional and national development experiences.
Welcoming the Ghanaian delegation, Gen Mubarakh said Rwanda and Ghana have maintained longstanding relations, particularly through cooperation in military professional education and training.
He said the visit provides an opportunity for the two defence institutions to exchange experiences while further strengthening their existing partnership.
Brig Gen Konadu, in turn, thanked the RDF for the reception and highlighted the historic ties between Ghana and Rwanda.
He particularly recalled the contribution of Ghanaian peacekeepers during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, saying the shared history had contributed to the strong relationship between the two countries.
He said the study tour would allow the visiting officers to deepen their understanding of Rwanda’s approach to national security, national cohesion and development.
During their engagement at RDF Headquarters, the delegation received a briefing on the transformation of the Rwandan military and its role in maintaining national, regional and international security.
The briefing examined the RDF’s evolution from a liberation movement into a professional military institution, as well as its contribution to Rwanda’s development and peacekeeping efforts beyond the country’s borders.
The delegation also visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where members paid tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. They subsequently toured the Campaign Against Genocide Museum.
The study programme will continue with visits to the RDF Command and Staff College, Zigama Credit and Savings Society (Zigama CSS), Military Medical Insurance and various government institutions.
The visit is expected to provide the Ghanaian officers with practical insights into Rwanda’s post-genocide reconstruction, security institutions and broader national development experience, while creating further opportunities for military-to-military knowledge exchange between Rwanda and Ghana.
