President Donald Trump has been pushing for a ban on voting by mail but the country’s top court has blocked the president’s attempts.
“The Supreme Court just blocked Trump’s attempt to dramatically change how Americans vote by mail -right as early voting is starting ahead of this year’s critical midterms,” said Ammy Klobucher a senior United States senator from Minnesota State.
Klobucher added that the Court ruling is, “A reminder that elections are run by the states, not the president.”
The justices upheld a federal judge’s order that temporarily blocked the US Postal Service (USPS) from moving forwards with new requirements for postal ballots.
Trump has long claimed this method allows non-citizens to cast ballots and is prone to fraud.
In March Trump signed an executive order directing the United States Postal Service(USPS) to deliver ballots only to voters on lists of citizens.
Legal challenges argued that the move violated states’ constitutional rights to run elections.
About 30% of voters, mostly Democrats, cast postal ballots in the general election two years ago.
