A fire has destroyed a warehouse belonging to Rwanda Energy Group (REG) in Rwamagana District, burning electricity equipment intended for customers in Rwamagana and Bugesera.

The fire broke out on Monday, September 7, in Kavura Village, Cyanya Cell, Kigabiro Sector, near Rwamagana Provincial Hospital and the Eastern Province headquarters.

The warehouse contained electrical cables, small transformers, prepaid electricity meters commonly known as Cashpower meters, and other equipment used to connect households to the national grid.

Rwanda National Police said emergency responders extinguished the fire and recovered some equipment before it was damaged.

“The fire was extinguished, but we have not yet established the value of the damaged equipment or what caused it,” SSP Hamdun Twizerimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, told Taarifa Rwanda.

Twizerimana said the quantity of equipment destroyed was substantial and would require a detailed assessment before the financial loss could be established.

Police have opened an investigation into the cause of the fire.

They also urged electricity workers to regularly inspect ageing cables and advised the public to avoid storing flammable materials or carelessly discarding cigarettes near buildings and dry vegetation.
