Former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi on Saturday joined Kigali residents and senior Rwandan officials for the monthly Umuganda community service, taking part in environmental conservation activities in Kicukiro District.
Masisi participated alongside the Governor of the City of Kigali, the Minister of Local Government, the Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), the Inspector General of the Rwanda National Police and other government officials, working together with residents in Gahanga Sector.
The exercise focused on maintaining areas where trees had previously been planted, including clearing bushes and vegetation around the young trees to support their growth.
Across Kigali, residents also carried out activities aimed at cleaning marshlands, drainage channels and removing waste obstructing waterways, part of continuing efforts to improve sanitation and reduce environmental risks in the rapidly growing capital.
Masisi’s participation added an international dimension to Umuganda, Rwanda’s long-established community service programme that brings residents and leaders together on the last Saturday of every month to undertake public works and community development activities.
City authorities said the day’s activities were carried out under the message “Hehe n’Icyuma,” emphasising collective responsibility in keeping Kigali clean, green and resilient.
