Former Speaker of Rwanda’s Chamber of Deputies Donatille Mukabalisa Dies at 66
Rwanda is mourning the passing of former Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and Senator Donatille Mukabalisa, who died on Thursday after a prolonged illness.
Mukabalisa passed away at King Faisal Hospital in Kigali, where she had been receiving treatment.
Born in July 1960 in Nyamata, Bugesera District, Mukabalisa built a distinguished career in academia, public service, and politics.
She served as a law lecturer at the Independent University of Kigali (ULK) before joining international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where she worked for 16 years.
Her political career spanned several decades and was marked by significant leadership roles.
She served as a Member of Parliament, Senator, and Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, a position she held from 2013 to 2024.
During her tenure as Speaker, Mukabalisa presided over parliamentary proceedings and played a key role in advancing Rwanda’s legislative agenda.
Beyond Parliament, Mukabalisa also served as President of the Liberal Party (PL), contributing to the country’s multiparty political landscape and promoting democratic governance.
