Alcohol consumption remains widespread among Rwandan men, with one in every two men reporting that they consume alcohol, according to the 2025 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS 7).

The survey found that 50% of men consume alcohol, compared to 18% of women, revealing a significant gender gap in drinking habits. Men are nearly three times more likely than women to consume alcohol.

Public health experts warn that harmful alcohol use contributes to a range of health and social challenges, including road traffic accidents, liver disease, hypertension, domestic violence, mental health disorders and risky sexual behaviour.

The findings suggest that while Rwanda has made notable progress in improving health outcomes, reducing harmful alcohol consumption remains a critical public health priority.

Experts recommend expanding awareness campaigns, strengthening community education, and promoting responsible alcohol use, particularly among young adults.
