The Rwanda Development Board (RDB), through the Visit Rwanda tourism campaign, has announced 2026 NBA Draft first-round pick Nate Ament as its inaugural Global Basketball Ambassador, marking a significant milestone in Rwanda’s efforts to strengthen its presence on the global sports stage.
The partnership builds on Rwanda’s long-term investment in sports as a driver of tourism, economic growth, and youth development.
As Global Basketball Ambassador, Ament will help promote Rwanda to international audiences while inspiring the next generation of athletes through basketball.
The appointment comes shortly after Ament was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft before his draft rights were acquired by the Milwaukee Bucks, making him one of the league’s brightest young talents.
RDB said the collaboration reflects Rwanda’s commitment to leveraging sport as a platform to showcase the country’s rich culture, natural beauty, and investment opportunities while encouraging youth participation in basketball and other sports.
A Growing Connection to Rwanda
Ament’s appointment carries added significance because of his Rwandan heritage. His mother, Godelive, is originally from Rwanda, and the 19-year-old forward has increasingly embraced his roots in recent years.
During a recent visit to Rwanda, Ament spoke about discovering more about the country’s history, resilience, and ambition, describing those qualities as an inspiration in his personal and professional journey.
He has also expressed openness to representing Rwanda in international basketball in the future.
Who Is Nate Ament?
Nate Ament is one of the NBA’s most promising young players. Standing 6-foot-10, the versatile forward starred at the University of Tennessee, where he earned All-SEC honors after averaging 16.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists during his freshman season.
Before college, Ament was among the highest-ranked recruits in the United States, earning recognition as a McDonald’s All-American and helping Team USA win gold at the 2024 FIBA U18 AmeriCup. His combination of size, skill and playmaking ability made him one of the standout prospects in the 2026 NBA Draft.
