The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Rwanda staff visited Rukumberi Genocide Memorial in Ngoma District to pay tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.
While at the memorial they reaffirmed their commitment to promoting unity, peace, and the well-being of Rwandans.
The commemoration took place on June 26, 2026, as AHF Rwanda staff embarked on a remembrance journey that began at Lake Mugesera, a site where many Tutsi were taken and killed during the Genocide.
They also visited the ADEPR Genocide Memorial before proceeding to the main Rukumberi Genocide Memorial, where more than 45,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi are laid to rest.
During the visit, AHF Rwanda staff listened to a testimony from Raymond Habimana, who shared the history of discrimination and persecution faced by the Tutsi community in Rukumberi before and during the Genocide. He emphasized that preserving the truth about history is a responsibility for everyone.
“Through remembrance, we renew our commitment to protecting our unity and ensuring that genocide never happens again,” he said.

The Country Programs Manager AHF Rwanda, Dr. Lambert Rangira, said that remembrance provides an opportunity to preserve history and reaffirm everyone’s role in building a peaceful and reconciled nation.
“Remembering the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi gives us a profound lesson on the importance of fighting hatred and division, while continuing to contribute to building a Rwanda founded on unity,” he said.

He added that AHF Rwanda will continue supporting Rwanda’s development journey through promoting good health, peace, and the well-being of communities.
The event was attended by Nshimiyimana J. Pierre, the Executive Secretary of Rukumberi Sector, who represented the leadership of Ngoma District.
He commended partners’ efforts in preserving history and promoting unity and reconciliation.

As Rwanda commemorates the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, AHF Rwanda continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting the country’s journey based on truth, justice, unity, and peace.
