Basketball Africa League brought together leaders from sports, business, technology, and the creative industry at the BAL Innovation Summit held in Kigali on the sidelines of the ongoing BAL Season 6 Playoffs and Finals at BK Arena.
The summit served as a platform for discussions on sports franchising, digital innovation, fan engagement, entrepreneurship, and the future of Africa’s rapidly growing sports ecosystem.
Industry executives, entrepreneurs, creatives, and technology leaders explored how basketball is increasingly influencing sectors beyond sport, including music, fashion, storytelling, and technology.
Speaking during the summit, Clare Akamanzi emphasized the broader cultural and economic role basketball continues to play across the continent.
“Basketball is more than a sport. It is a connection. It connects music, fashion, storytelling, technology, and many parts of the wider economy. Through the BAL, we are proud to help power Africa’s creative economy and amplify its voice on the global stage.”
Akamanzi noted that the BAL has become an important platform for showcasing African talent and innovation while helping create opportunities for young entrepreneurs, athletes, and creatives.
Technology also emerged as a key focus of the summit, with conversations centered on how digital tools are transforming fan experiences and the business of sports globally.
Nikki Van Gasse highlighted the growing role of intelligent systems in modern sports entertainment.
“The next generation of sports is not defined by arenas alone, but by connected ecosystems where every experience from entry to engagement is intelligent and seamless. Technology is now central to how fans experience the game.”
Participants discussed how African sports organizations can leverage innovation to improve ticketing, fan interaction, data management, sponsorship opportunities, and digital content distribution.
The BAL Innovation Summit comes at a time when Africa’s sports industry is experiencing significant growth, driven by increased investment, expanding audiences, and rising global interest in African talent and culture.
Kigali, which continues to position itself as a hub for international sports and business events, provided a fitting backdrop for conversations focused on the future of sports and innovation on the continent.
The BAL Season 6 Playoffs and Finals continue at BK Arena, drawing fans from across Africa and beyond while reinforcing basketball’s growing influence as both a sporting and cultural force in Africa.
